The man in the gray suit staggered back, his arrogance evaporating into cold sweat. He looked from the massive open door to the filthy child, his mouth opening and closing without sound. The elegant woman in navy pearls dropped her designer clutch. It hit the marble with a sharp, pathetic slap.
From the shadows of the executive wing, an elderly man in an impeccably tailored dark suit emerged. His silver cane tapped against the floor with a rhythmic, terrifying finality. He was the bank’s chairman—the untouchable Elias Sterling.
The crowd parted for him instantly, breathless and terrified.
Elias stopped a few feet from the boy. He stared at the giant brass wheel, then down at the child’s dirty face, his piercing eyes searching the boy’s small, smudged features.
“Only two people in the world knew the sequence to that door,” Elias said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that commanded the massive hall. “Myself. And my son, who disappeared ten years ago.”
The boy looked up, his small chest rising and falling.
“He didn’t disappear,” the child whispered. “He passed away last month. Mom said it was time to come find you.”
A choked gasp escaped the old man. The silver cane clattered onto the marble. Slowly, ignoring the staring elite, the fearsome titan of finance sank to his knees.
Elias reached out with shaking hands, gently grasping the boy’s dirt-stained shoulders.
“You have his eyes,” Elias choked out, a single tear cutting through his iron facade. He pulled the fragile boy into a fierce, desperate embrace, burying his face in the child’s oversized, faded shirt.
