Part 2: Weight of White Silk

The boutique plunged into a breathless, suffocating silence.

The only sound was the soft rustle of the heavy beading as the girl shifted the white gown into her arms. The fabric caught the overhead lights, flashing in a cascade of diamond-bright sparks.

On the marble floor, the woman in the gold suit scrambled backward. Her palms squeaked against the smooth stone, her perfectly manicured nails scratching uselessly at the floor. The arrogant sneer had vanished from her face, replaced by the panicked, wide eyes of someone who suddenly realized they were standing on a trapdoor.

“Are you blind?” the woman shrieked, her voice cracking as she pointed a shaking finger at the girl. “She assaulted me! Call security! Have this street rat thrown out immediately!”

The employee in the black suit did not flinch. He did not look at the woman. He kept his posture perfectly straight, his eyes respectfully lowered toward the girl in the scuffed sneakers.

From the back of the store, the boutique manager stepped forward. She was an older woman with sharp features and severe posture, moving with the quiet authority of someone who catered exclusively to billionaires.

“Is there a problem, Miss Eleanor?” the manager asked, her voice like smooth glass.

The girl—Eleanor—looked down at the trembling woman on the floor.

“No,” Eleanor said softly. “No problem at all. Just someone who lost her balance.”

The manager finally turned her cold, calculating gaze to the woman in the gold suit.

“Madam,” the manager said, her tone entirely devoid of warmth. “I must ask you to collect your belongings and leave the premises immediately. You are disrupting a private fitting for the owner’s daughter.”

The words hung heavy in the air.

The crowd of shoppers began to whisper, the sound like dry leaves caught in the wind. The woman’s face drained of color. She fumbled for her silver purse, her hands shaking so badly she dropped it twice before finally clutching it to her chest.

Humiliated and entirely broken, she scrambled to her feet and practically ran toward the glass doors. Suddenly, the flashy gold sequins of her suit looked incredibly cheap as she fled out into the busy street.

Eleanor didn’t even watch her go.

She simply turned toward the VIP fitting rooms, the heavy silk draped effortlessly over her arm, leaving the empty display window far behind.
