PART 2

The room seemed to shrink around Michael.
His older brother, Daniel, stood near the doorway with trembling hands, unable to look at their mother.
Evelyn pointed at him.
“You were told to stay away.”
Daniel flinched, and that small movement told me more than any confession could.
My attorney opened the sealed envelope and removed two reports.
“The prenatal paternity test confirms Michael Carter is the biological father of Mrs. Carter’s unborn child.”
A wave of whispers swept through the room.
Michael’s face drained of color.
“That’s impossible,” Evelyn hissed.
“No,” I said quietly. “It’s inconvenient.”
My attorney lifted the second document.
“This report also confirms that someone submitted an earlier falsified sample under Mrs. Carter’s name.”
Everyone turned toward Evelyn.
She straightened her pearls as if pride alone could save her.
“I did what was necessary to protect my son.”
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
“No, Mom. You did it to protect yourself.”
Evelyn’s eyes flashed.
“Be silent.”
But Daniel kept going.
“She made me steal Olivia’s medical paperwork from the clinic. She said if Michael divorced her before the baby was born, the trust could be changed.”
Michael stared at him.
“What trust?”
My attorney opened his briefcase and placed a copy of Michael’s grandfather’s will on the table.
“The Carter family trust transfers controlling shares to Michael’s first legitimate child.”
Evelyn lunged for the paper, but the man in the gray suit blocked her.
He was a court-appointed investigator.
“And if the child was declared illegitimate,” he said, “those shares would remain under Evelyn Carter’s control.”
Michael looked at his mother like he had never seen her before.
“You used me?”
Evelyn’s mouth trembled.
“I built this family. I protected everything.”
I touched my stomach.
“You tried to erase my baby.”
For the first time, Michael reached for me.
“Olivia, I didn’t know.”
I stepped back.
“That never stopped you from serving papers.”
Then Daniel pulled a small recorder from his coat.
“Mom,” he whispered, “tell them what you said about the accident.”
Evelyn froze.
My attorney looked sharply at him.
“What accident?”
Daniel pressed play.
Evelyn’s voice filled the room.
“If Olivia loses the baby before birth, the problem solves itself.”
