She claimed Grant had agreed that Maisie needed to be “broken of the habit” of running to her grandmother whenever she became frightened or upset. She said he approved the lock and knew exactly what was planned. More damagingly, she had evidence.
One recording was made three nights before the flood.
Bell allowed Evelyn to hear only the section investigators had already authenticated.
Grant’s voice was unmistakable, impatient and slightly slurred, as though he had been drinking.
“She needs to learn that crying doesn’t get her out of everything.”
Vanessa responded more quietly. “And if she panics?”
“Then she panics.”
There was a brief rustle in the recording before Grant continued.
“Five minutes. Ten if she keeps screaming. She’ll remember it.”
Evelyn removed the headphones.
Bell did not ask whether she wanted to hear it again.
The recording transformed the case because it did something the physical evidence could not: it established intention before the room ever flooded. Grant could no longer credibly claim that he stumbled into Vanessa’s punishment without understanding what was happening. Whatever argument remained about who controlled the water or who installed the bolt, he had participated in planning an ordeal designed to frighten his daughter.
By evening, prosecutors requested a warrant for Grant’s arrest on additional charges while his attorney attempted to negotiate the terms of surrender. The news reached Evelyn through Bell before it appeared publicly, and she felt no satisfaction. Her son was finally facing consequences, but consequences did not reverse the moment Maisie had pressed her hands against glass and asked him to open the door.
Grant surrendered just after seven.
Vanessa did not accompany him.
Instead, she remained with her attorney in a private conference room and provided access to another folder on the encrypted drive. This material had little to do with Maisie directly. It contained financial transfers, property records, and correspondence between Vanessa and a man identified only by an initial in several of the files.
