The bed was gone.
The chair was gone.
Only the little digital photo frame remained.
I picked it up.
There was one final picture I hadn’t noticed.
It showed my mother sitting in her bed.
She was smiling.
Claire was standing beside her.
And Ethan was behind them.
The picture had been taken three weeks before my mother died.
On the table beside Mom was a folded piece of paper.
I zoomed in.
I could barely read it.
But one sentence was visible.
“Sarah needs to know.”
My heart stopped.
My mother had known.
PART THREE — WHAT MY MOTHER KNEW
I called Claire that afternoon.
She didn’t answer.
I called again.
Nothing.
Then I drove to the address listed on an old medical form I found in my mother’s files.
Claire opened the door after the third knock.
When she saw me, she started crying.
I didn’t say hello.
I held up my phone.
“Tell me everything.”
She stepped aside.
I walked in.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she said:
“I’m sorry.”
I almost couldn’t stand hearing those words anymore.
“Everyone is sorry.”
She wiped her face.
“Your mother knew.”
I froze.
“Knew what?”
“About Ethan.”
My chest tightened.
“When?”
“Months ago.”
I sat down.
Claire explained.
She and Ethan had started seeing each other six months earlier.
At first, it was physical.
Then emotional.
They met in hotels because Ethan didn’t want anyone to know.
But there was something I hadn’t understood.
My mother had discovered them.
She had seen messages on Ethan’s phone one afternoon while he was visiting her.
She confronted him.
He admitted everything.
I stared at Claire.
