“Not until three months ago.”
“How did you find out?”
“Bianca kept a box in a storage unit. I found hospital records, photographs, and letters from Adrian.”
“Did Bianca raise you?”
Anna’s expression became complicated.
“Bianca and her mother did.”
“Was she kind to you?”
“Sometimes.”
The answer hurt more than a simple no.
Anna continued.
“When I was little, she told me my biological mother was sick and could not care for me. She said my father died before I was born.”
She looked toward the giant portrait of Adrian hanging near the ballroom entrance.
“Then Adrian began visiting when I was nine.”
My hands went cold.
“What did he tell you?”
“That he was a family friend.”
“Did he ever say he was your father?”
“No.”
“Did you know he was married to me?”
“Not at first. Bianca kept newspapers away from me. We lived in a small town. I attended school under a different last name.”
