PART 2 – Five Minutes After My Divorce, I Left the Country with My Children – 6!001

“Mom,” Sophie said, “are we poor now?”

Julianne sat on the edge of the bed. “No, sweetheart.”

“Are we rich?”

Julianne almost laughed, but the question was too serious for that.

“We are safe. We have enough. That matters most.”

Sophie nodded. “Dad always said enough wasn’t enough.”

“I know.”

“Was he wrong?”

Julianne looked at her daughter’s small, earnest face.

“Yes,” she said. “He was wrong.”

After both children slept, Julianne returned to the terrace. Her phone lay on the table beside her mother’s letter. There were messages from Marcus, Roxanne, Evelyn, and three numbers she did not recognize.

She opened none of them.

Then a new message appeared from Daniel Price, Marcus’s attorney. The subject line made her hand pause.

Urgent: Information Concerning Your Divorce Agreement.

Julianne forwarded it to her own counsel without reading further. Then she leaned back and listened to the city below.

For the first time in years, no one in the house was angry with her for being quiet.

Near midnight, Elise stepped outside carrying a small wooden box.

“I was waiting for the right moment,” she said. “But perhaps right moments are less useful than honest ones.”

Julianne looked at the box. “What is that?”

“Something your mother left with me. Not through the trust. Personally.”

Inside was a key, old and brass, attached to a tag with an address written in Elena’s hand.

Julianne recognized the street. It was in the same city she had just left.

Beneath the key was a photograph.

She lifted it carefully.

Her mother stood outside a brick townhouse Julianne had never seen before. Beside her was Evelyn Henderson, much younger, holding a baby wrapped in a white blanket.

On the back, one sentence had been written in blue ink.

Before you judge Evelyn, ask her what she gave up to protect you.

Julianne stared at the photograph until the terrace lights blurred.

Elise’s voice was gentle. “There is more to the Henderson family than Marcus ever told you.”

Julianne looked at the sleeping house behind her, then down at the key in her palm.

Somewhere across the ocean, the life she had escaped was beginning to reveal doors she had never known existed.

And one of them had her mother’s handwriting on it.
