Not dressed as concern.
The truth, ugly and breathing.
Camila’s veil trembled around her face.
“Abuela always favored you,” she said. “Valeria the responsible one. Valeria the smart one. Valeria the strong one. Even when you became…” She stopped, her eyes dragging over Valeria’s body with old cruelty. “Even when you stopped trying.”
Valeria smiled faintly.
It was not a happy smile.
It was the smile of a woman watching a mask crack.
“You stole my fiancé,” she said softly. “You stole my inheritance. And you are still angry because someone loved me without asking your permission.”
Camila’s face crumpled.
Mauricio grabbed her wrist.
“Enough.”
Alejandro stepped forward.
Mauricio released her immediately.
That small movement said more than any rumor ever could.
The man everyone feared had not raised a hand. Had not threatened. Had not even spoken.
But Mauricio’s body understood danger before his pride did.
The official approached him.
“Señor Ledesma, you will come with us.”
Mauricio turned toward the guests.
“This is a misunderstanding. My lawyers will destroy this.”
“No,” Alejandro said. “They will not.”
Mauricio laughed, but sweat had gathered at his hairline.
“You think because people fear you, you own the law?”
“No.” Alejandro’s eyes were flat. “I own your debt.”
The words landed with the weight of a falling chandelier.
Mauricio went still.
Alejandro continued, calm and precise.
“Your construction firm has been borrowing against future contracts for two years. The Querétaro land was supposed to secure your new development. Without it, you default. As of this morning, your largest creditor sold that debt to a company I control.”
Mauricio’s face drained of color.
“You can’t—”
“I can.”
Valeria stared at Alejandro.
This was the part he had not told her.
He had said he had investigated. He had said there were documents. He had said she deserved to know the truth before the wedding.
But he had not said he had placed his hand around Mauricio’s entire empire.
