PART 2 – The Man I Escaped Finally Found Me—And Saw His Own Eyes in My Twins – 6!001

“Yes.”

“First steps.”

“Yes.”

“Birthdays.”

“Yes.”

He swallowed hard.

“I don’t know where to put that.”

I ran my finger along the spine of a book.

“Neither do I.”

“I am angry,” he admitted. “Not at you. At the years. At myself. At every person who made this happen.”

“I’m angry too.”

“I know.”

“No, Luca. I’m angry that part of me wants to be relieved.”

He was silent.

I finally looked at him.

“I built my peace out of believing you broke me. Now you’re telling me someone else struck the match, but I still lived in the fire. I don’t know how to feel about that.”

His eyes softened.

“You don’t have to make it easier for me.”

That was the moment I understood he had changed.

The old Luca would have tried to fix my pain by force of will. This Luca sat beside it and let it breathe.

On the tenth day, a letter arrived with no return address.

It was waiting in our mailbox between a grocery flyer and Mrs. Pike’s flour invoice.

Inside was a single photograph.

Vanessa.

My sister stood outside a train station, thinner than I remembered, wearing a gray coat and looking over her shoulder as if she expected someone behind her. The photo was recent; a poster in the background advertised a summer concert dated only three weeks earlier.

On the back, someone had written:

She tried to come home.

Do not trust the man who found you.

My fingers went numb.

Luca read it twice, his face unreadable.

“Sarah,” he said carefully, “this could be meant to turn you against me.”

“Or warn me.”

“Yes.”

The honesty frightened me more than denial would have.

That night, I could not sleep. I sat by the window and watched the streetlights flicker over wet pavement. Below, Luca stood outside the bakery entrance, not guarding us exactly, not imposing, just unable to leave.

At midnight, Ash appeared beside me with his blanket trailing behind him.

“Is the big man my dad?”

The question was so quiet I almost missed it.

I pulled him into my lap.

“Yes.”

He leaned against me without surprise.

“Does Lena know?”

“Maybe in her own way.”

“Did he leave us?”

My throat tightened.

“No, sweetheart. He didn’t know where we were.”

Ash was quiet for a long time.
