The Fall of an Empire: The Ultimate Retribution

“Victoria helped herself.”

Conrad stepped closer.

“Do you know what Sterling Global was before men like me built it?”

“My son’s inheritance apparently.”

His jaw tightened.

Avery saw it.

The first crack.

She opened the folder.

“I sign. Leo walks out.”

“And Liam signs.”

“He won’t.”

“He will.”

“Why?”

Conrad smiled again.

“Because unlike you, Avery, Liam has finally understood what it feels like to love something more than himself.”

A sound came from behind her.

Footsteps.

Avery turned.

Liam stepped into the corridor.

Conrad looked delighted.

“I knew you’d come.”

Avery stared at Liam.

“I told you—”

“I know.”

Liam walked past her.

He placed his own signed authorization on the table.

Conrad looked down.

Then frowned.

The signature was real.

But the document wasn’t a transfer.

It was a complete and irrevocable surrender of Liam Sterling’s personal voting shares to an independent fiduciary trust.

Conrad’s face changed.

“What did you do?”

Liam met his eyes.

“I made sure that even if Avery signs, you still can’t control Sterling.”

Conrad’s composure vanished.

“You idiot.”

“Probably.”

“You just gave away your empire.”

Liam looked through the glass at Leo.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“I finally figured out what the empire cost.”

Conrad reached beneath his jacket.

Avery saw the movement.

“Liam!”

A gunshot cracked through the corridor.

Leo screamed.

Liam collapsed.

And Conrad grabbed Avery by the arm.
PART 9 — THE MAN WHO FINALLY CHOSE
For half a second, the world stopped.

Liam hit the floor.

Blood spread across the white fabric of his shirt near his shoulder.

Not his heart.

Avery registered that instinctively.

Then training replaced fear.

She drove her heel down onto Conrad’s foot and ripped her arm free.

Conrad raised the weapon again.

Before he could fire, the corridor lights died.

Julian.

Total darkness.

Then emergency strobes flashed red.

Federal agents breached from both sides.

“FBI! DROP THE WEAPON!”

Conrad fired wildly.

Glass shattered.

Avery threw herself toward the conference room.

Leo was crying behind the damaged glass.

“Mom!”

“I’m here!”

The guard who had been watching Leo ran.

He made it three steps before agents tackled him.

Conrad tried reaching a service elevator.

Liam, half-conscious on the floor, caught his ankle.

It was almost absurd.

The billionaire who had once humiliated Avery because he believed his mother’s lies was bleeding on a dirty laboratory floor, using his remaining strength to stop the man who had kidnapped the son he had only learned existed hours earlier.

Conrad kicked him.

Liam didn’t let go.

Agents reached them.

Conrad Vale was forced face-down.

Handcuffs snapped around his wrists.

For the first time in nearly forty years, the man behind the Sterling empire had no one left to order around.

Avery didn’t watch.

She broke through the conference-room door.

Leo ran into her arms.

“Mom!”

She dropped to her knees.

“I’ve got you.”

“They said you weren’t coming.”

“I will always come.”

“Always?”

“Always.”

Leo buried his face against her.

Over his shoulder, Avery saw paramedics surrounding Liam.

Their eyes met.

He didn’t ask her to come closer.
