The word carrier struck like a bell no one else could hear.
Mercer’s eyes narrowed.
His mind, sharp even after years in a chair, began assembling something unfamiliar.
Medical terminology.
No… not medical.
Experimental.
His pulse changed.
He kept reading.
“If Ellie has reached you, then Daniel Whitaker has been detained under false jurisdictional charges. That is expected. Delay was necessary.”
At the defense table, Daniel Whitaker stiffened.
“What?” he whispered.
Ellie did not look at him.
Her eyes stayed on the judge.
Mercer continued.
“She will say something impossible. Believe her anyway.”
A laugh started somewhere in the courtroom.
It died before it could fully form.
Because Mercer had stopped breathing.
The final line on the note was shorter than the rest.
But it changed everything.
“Tell Calvin he will walk again when he stops pretending he doesn’t remember me.”
The paper slipped slightly in his hand.
Not from shock.
From something deeper.
Recognition.
A name buried so far beneath the layers of his life that it should not have been reachable.
A name that had no place in a courtroom.
A name that belonged to another lifetime.
