The man who had once controlled a real estate empire now stood inside his penthouse while agents photographed his files.
Grant called Lucas from an unknown number.
Lucas answered on speaker.
“You think you won?” Grant said.
“No,” Lucas replied. “I think Claire survived.”
“She is nothing without my name.”
Claire leaned toward the phone.
“My name was Bennett before you, and it will be Bennett after you.”
Grant went silent.
“You turned my family against me,” he finally said.
Margaret spoke from beside Claire.
“You did that yourself.”
Grant hung up.
That night, Claire’s condition suddenly worsened.
The fetal monitor began showing dangerous decelerations. Dr. Morgan entered with an emergency team and explained that the placental separation had increased.
“We need to deliver Noah now.”
Claire stared at him.
“He’s only thirty-one weeks.”
“The neonatal team is prepared. Waiting may put both of you at greater risk.”
Fear returned with overwhelming force.
“What if he doesn’t survive?”
Ethan took one hand. Lucas took the other.
“He is a Bennett,” Ethan said. “We are difficult to get rid of.”
Claire laughed through her tears.
As nurses prepared her for surgery, the doors at the end of the maternity corridor opened.
Grant appeared.
He had violated the restraining order.
His suit was wrinkled. His hair was wet from the rain. Two security officers followed him, warning him to stop.
“I have a right to see my son!”
Ethan stepped into the corridor.
“You have no right to come near her.”
Grant pointed toward the operating area.
“That is my child.”
“No,” Claire said from the rolling bed. “He is not another asset.”
Grant stared at her.
For the first time, Claire did not lower her eyes.
“You tried to take my home, my money, my work, my voice, and my sanity. You will not take my son.”
“You are making a mistake.”
“The mistake was believing fear was the same thing as love.”
Police officers arrived behind him.
Grant turned.
Lucas held up his phone. “The restraining order violation has been documented.”
An officer placed Grant in handcuffs.
Cameras from the hospital entrance captured him being escorted through the lobby beneath the giant brass plaque bearing his name.
As the elevator doors closed, Grant shouted, “Claire, tell them this is a misunderstanding!”
Claire looked at him one final time.
“No.”
The operating-room doors closed.
Noah Bennett was born forty-seven minutes later.
He weighed three pounds, eleven ounces.
For nine terrifying seconds, he made no sound.
Then a thin cry rose through the room.
Claire sobbed beneath the surgical lights.
The neonatal team carried him to an incubator, wrapped in wires and smaller than Claire had imagined any human being could be.
But he was alive.
Ethan and Lucas stood outside the glass nursery watching their nephew breathe.
Margaret joined them.
“He looks like Claire,” she whispered.
“He looks angry,” Ethan said.
Lucas smiled.
“Good. Anger runs in the family.”
Grant spent the night in county custody for violating the protective order. Prosecutors declined to release him immediately because witnesses had reported threats and attempts to alter evidence.
By morning, federal charges were being prepared.
Wire fraud.
Charity fraud.
Obstruction.
