Part 2: This was the fourth time in five weeks.

By the time Ethan carried Mason into the emergency room, his son’s breathing had turned shallow and ragged. Doctors ran tests, pressed his abdomen, checked his blood, and exchanged the same doubtful glances Ethan had come to hate.
“Stress can cause severe symptoms,” one physician said carefully.
“He’s not making it up,” Ethan snapped.
Across the room, his wife, Claire, stood perfectly still in her cream coat, her face arranged into worry. Too perfect. Too calm.
Mason stirred on the hospital bed. His eyes opened halfway, glassy with pain. Then his shaking hand rose.
He pointed directly at Claire.
“She knows why,” he whispered.
The room froze.
Claire’s mouth parted. “Mason… sweetheart, you’re confused.”
But from the corner, someone made a small sound.
Nora, the new nanny, stood clutching her purse strap. She had only been with them three weeks, quiet, polite, almost invisible. Now her face had gone gray.
Ethan turned. “Nora?”
She swallowed hard. “I wasn’t sure. I thought maybe I misunderstood.”
“Misunderstood what?” Ethan demanded.
Nora looked at Claire, and fear flickered across her face.
“The cocoa,” she said. “Mrs. Walker made it every night Mason got sick. She told me never to touch the blue tin in the pantry. Yesterday, I saw her mix something from it into his cup.”
Claire’s expression changed so quickly Ethan almost missed it. The worried wife vanished. Something colder stared out from behind her eyes.
“That girl is lying,” Claire said.
But Mason began to cry.
Ethan did not remember moving toward Claire, only the doctor stepping between them and calling security. Nora reached into her purse with trembling fingers and pulled out a small folded napkin.
“I saved some powder,” she whispered. “From the counter.”
The doctor took it.
Claire laughed once, softly. “You have no idea what you’re doing.”
Then Ethan’s phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number lit the screen.
**Check the basement freezer before she gets home.**
Ethan looked up.
Claire was smiling now.
